Thoughts on Introspection: The Process, the Song and the Video

"Introspection" is the newest single from my album Audiostrata. I'm featuring it on Pandora for the next two months. The inspiration for "Introspection" came from my desire to write something soothing and calming, a song for meditation and reflection. I find myself listening to it often for that very purpose. The Oxford dictionary defines introspection as "the examination or observation of one's own mental and emotional processes." I also think it's instructive to look at introspection's antonyms: avoidance, neglect, thoughtlessness, mindlessness.

We can all benefit from looking inward from time to time. My favorite way to create an introspective moment is to walk along the beach and just let my mind wander. I get so many good ideas from doing that and I seem to be able to solve, or at least better understand, many of the issues and challenges I am facing at that moment. I always emerge from my thought session feeling refreshed. The intent of the song is to simulate that process in under three minutes. Throughout the song, I incorporated an insistent snare drum that takes the place of the "om" mantra used in meditation. The tempo of the song is slow, the music contemplative, until it nears the end. At that point, it becomes more spirited, mirroring the "aha" moments I often have. The song ends with a repeating sound collage, symbolizing my desire to practice introspection regularly.

When I created the video for "Introspection," I wanted visuals that conveyed the sense of peace I achieve when I go through the process. I also wanted to create a vehicle to enable concentration and looking inward. The scenes I used are evocative and beautiful. I plan to watch the video often to help get me ready for my deep thinking sessions. I hope others can use it for that purpose too. You can view the video below.
